“The key is not to prioritize what's on your schedule, but to schedule your priorities.”
Stephen Covey
The Peter R. Marsh Foundation is committed to helping small business leaders in the Pacific Northwest Region succeed both personally and professionally. We understand that these leaders face many challenges and pressures every day - making sure their customers are satisfied, their work is completed and their bills are paid. All too often, there is little time and energy left to spend on personal development activities.
Author Stephen Covey, in his bestseller, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, recommends a discipline called "Sharpening the Saw." Covey uses the metaphor of a woodcutter sawing wood for several days straight - intent on cutting as much wood as he possibly can. The woodcutter is a very hard worker. But over time, he notices that while he is sawing his heart out, the pace of production is slowing down. In fact, the harder he saws, the slower his woodpile grows. Why? His saw blade has become dull from over-use.
It's easy for us, upon hearing the story, to know the solution to the problem. Our first thought is, "Step away from the work and sharpen the saw in order to become more productive once again." But many of us are just like the woodcutter. We get caught up in the "tyranny of the urgent" and continue to work harder, not smarter. Very often, small business leaders work long hours to accomplish necessary tasks, but don't take the necessary time away to maintain their cutting edge - to develop leadership skills that will make their work easier and more effective.
The Peter R. Marsh Foundation offers practical opportunities for hard-working small business leaders to develop themselves personally by focusing attention on their leadership skills. This in turn will enable them to accomplish more as well as improve their effectiveness back at the office, jobsite or factory floor.
Participants in the Small Business Leadership Program can expect:
- Better business "bottom line" through more thoroughly engaged employees
- Better relationships with both employees and customers
- Greater personal confidence
- A higher level of fulfillment in their work
